Back to Tillage! The weather has warmed up and the ground has thawed just enough for us to get back to tillage. We're wrapping up combining with just 80 acres remaining. Our final test plot. The FBN corn held its own.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Zach have you ever tried the capela corn head I can't remember if you have or not. Since you didn't get much tillage done because of the weather and since the corn test weight was low will the cornstalks explode in the spring when you hit them with a disk chisel or mulch finisher ? Looking forward to your 2020 videos

I don't farm. I do like watching this show as I grew up in a small village that was farm land all around so I have an interest in it but know about nothing about those machines. I would like it if the man would say how much each machine he is talking about costs roughly I know they are expensive but just how much for each thing he is using. Those machines sure have a lot of computers on them and I heard President Trump talking about making John Deer release the software programs for them so the farmer can plug in a lap top and figure out why the computer won't let the tractor or whatever start. Then I saw how some farmers had to resort to boot leg computer programs to do what the President has been working on getting them .

Thanks for doing the videos. As a new farmer I love to watch the professionals. I was reading a news article about a small family farm in distress. Having trouble paying bills with the low price of commodities and stuff. I am a city farmer and get what I ask usually. That farm had a go fund me so gave a donation. I guess there are plenty of farms like this. Just wanted to see if you would want to raise some awareness and if there where some good places to send a donation thanks

Why do abuse the soil with tillage, especially before winter!! Why do you want top soil to erode? Why do you treat the living soil like dirt? Do you think its only function is to hold up plants? You are killing the soil's biology with no good reason!! Why do you create a mud hole that kills biology? Tillage is the worst thing you can do to your farm.

Thanks for all you do! Im 57, farm raised, living in downtown Rochester, Mn. Stepped into a prominent drug store here in downtown Mayo Clinic one day in search of an Old Farmers Almanac. Knew they stocked them only to hear from the patriarch of the establishment. "Sent them back- wouldnt sell in this store- no farmers round here" Had to laugh. Told the fella Sir, I disagree. Im looking at a farmet right in front of me...How so he replied... You sir are a farmer. Every day you show up to farm the general public for your livelihood. In a way we all are farmers......We had a good chuckle over it!!!

3:23 "...to get my seed and chemical all purchased." Yummmm, that sounds delicious. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner) this young, hard-working man will realize that the Round-up ready stuff he plants is the antithesis to good health (both human and soil). Heck, Roundup has already been found to cause cancer. This way of farming (with tons of chemicals) is the next tobacco industry lawsuit waiting to happen, not to mention all the harm done to our watersheds from the nitrates in the fertilizers. But, I don't place all the blame on him, a large part belongs to the farm subsidy program, which encourages higher yields, the destruction of the soil and the water basins, etc. A rapid switch to organic or even non-GMO crops is not likely because those crops wouldn't survive in that soil now, but a gradual one is possible and is a route I hope he takes. All that being said he's a good family man, with a great work ethic, and sense of humor, so I'll keep watching.

@Robert Regan oh and if your worried about the water issue check out Zach and Randy's couple of videos where they actually drink tile water, and discuss an article, sounding much like you, that bashes with rhetoric and not fact, their way of life. I am going to presume you go to farmers markets and also eat allot of green stemmy things. I am sure Zach's grain is not making it into any of your consumables.
John O
John O 11 oy oldin
I can tell you first hand that a rapid switch, which I determine rapid being one planting season to the next, has had no detrimental affect on growing a non GMO crop after a GMO crop. Been doing it for years. GMO soybean to nongmo corn, and GMO corn to non GMO soybean rotation for years now. Yields all within avg for our area. GMO and nongmo comparison. I just haven't seen the facts that you have read, but not tried to recreate to verify what you have read.
John O
John O 11 oy oldin
How does the farm subsidy program encourage higher yields, destruction of our soil, water basins and what is etc?
John O
John O 11 oy oldin
@Robert Regan When did I say RoundUp won't hurt you? There's labels on the containers that read do not ingest, if so call poison control, what makes you think I want to drink it? Duh! Let's talk about Glyphosate...I am sorry, that might be too much info for you. See Glyphosate is the main ingredient of RoundUp. See RoundUp is a brand name not the chemical name. Glyphosate kills plants by covering the leaves and prevents the plant from continuing photosynthesis. Hence plant dies. When Glyphosate comes into contact with soil it neutralizes and becomes non detrimental to life of a plant, or in our case a yield robbing, moisture sucking, sucky harvest creating nuisance in the field.
