Millennial Farmer

10 oy oldin

We got to visit Trevor Bales, our hay farming friend in Buckeye, AZ. He taught me to drive a "squeeze" and showed us their barns/sheds and machinery. I also came home to our farm and picked up our first corn seed of the year from my local Farmers Business Network hub. The dogs found a squirrel and the weather is getting nice. Spring is here!
Thank you to Bales Hay for the tour and the fun!

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

I was wrong about being able to use conventional seed as organic seed. I learned that it needs to be certified as organic seed first. Organic seed is conventional seed, but not all conventional seed is certified (in fact most is not). Also, the seed treatment needs to be specifically organic or non-existent. That's my bad. Thanks to the people who let me know!

Ehh, you say that modern farming is "good for the environment", but i heavily suspect that come the future it will turn out that modern day large scale industrial agriculture isn't sustainable in the long run. Neither when it comes to meat production or crop production. My prediction is that it will eventually turn out that the way forward will be to invent more environmentally friendly engines that let out less emissions, and then stepping down the size of agricultural operations to become more manageable and make less of an impact on the environment. No matter how you look at it, having giant fields and farms that span hundreds or thousands of acres makes a massive negative impact on the ecosystem, which means that it isn't good for us in the long run. At the end of the day, small-scale local food production with modern technology is just the better alternative all way around.

Greetings from the Arctic in Canada. I have been enjoying your video reviews and general discussions of issues, new equipment, and other interests affecting the farmer of today. I have not been on the farm in 30 years, but it brings back a lot of memories, so thank you. Question: What is your take on non-GMO farmers being taken to court under lawsuits filed by Monsanto and other GMO Seed Creators for patent infringement due to cross-pollination from neighboring GMO crops. I find it distressing that they are being impacted by a simply natural event (pollination) when they are simply making a choice to use non-GMO seed which under restraining orders etc coming from GMO companies are hindering their ability to bring their crops to market or paying farm killing fines for patent infringement. I would be curious to hear your side being a GMO seed user. Thank you for your advance by reply here, or on one of your upcoming videos. BTW Just like to say, your wife is wonderful, are you sure you deserve her? A farmer's wife that supports you as she seems to is a rare thing, and I hope you know how blessed you are.

Man Zach... It kinda kills me to see this equipment being showcased here, instead of where it originated. The squeezes were designed in, and are still built in Oregon. A lot of the worlds lawn grass is grown there (likely including your dad's lawn). It's the main crop of the Willamette Valley. The leftover hay (though not green as Trevor's is) is baled, compressed further in hydraulic presses, and shipped to Asia on containers. The squeeze was invented to handle the process of loading the bales onto semi trailers for removal from the field to massive hay sheds (Yes, they're sheds, not barns. The builders there call them sheds too. Sorry Trevor. lol). This was necessitated by the switch from small bales to six and seven tie bales. The huge bales are stacked into blocks, which are left in rows, then loaded onto semi trailers with a squeeze. The yard squeezes are basically just a modified huge forklift. The Roadrunner squeezes by Sunny D are a custom product designed to be both proficient in the field and on the road. Would be cool to see you tour an operation or two in Oregon sometime. I know some people who could showcase the whole process if you need a hookup. 😉

Consumers and organic, prime example of a little information being dangerous!
SuperStewie 8 oy oldin
Personally, I don't get the non GMO argument. I can see arguments against pesticides and herbicides, but the idea that controlling the genetics of a plant can be dangerous is silly to me: Humans have been doing that in some form or another since we stopped being nomadic. Selective breeding and other human intervention that modifies the genetics of plants, and even animals, is a key factor in allowing us to have flourished the way that we have. Non-GMO and organic should be completely separate from each other in ideology and regulation. "Organic" is about synthetic chemicals being applied to the field and the plants. "GMO" is about the specific variety of a plant, and I don't see how the two got all intertwined with each other.

I've been watching your channel for a few month now and I discovered 'saskdutchkid' on a dairy farm to your north. Let me tell you, your operation makes this kid and his family look like a struggling family in a cess pool. He rarely cleans his equipment, Probably has more chores to do than he can handle especially milking that never seems to end. probably needs more support staff. Your channel and operation is considerably more professional. Kudos to you. And the tend to use red equipment.

If your planter is set up for no till you wont have any trouble with getting through the trash and the ground should not cause any trouble mud wise. We did minimum and no till here in southern Iowa for 30 plus years and for most part never had any more trouble with mud than conventional practice farming.
