Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Check out carbon cowboys. The farmer/author Wendell Berry in 'The Unsettling of America' argues that American agriculture is going down the wrong path with farming based on more and more technology where it is a race to the bottom in terms of producing the most monocrops at the cheapest prices:

Hi, are there any improvements that you would like to see with the driver controls? What would you want to see changed to improve the human machine interface? For example, I notice that tractors don't have any steering wheel buttons/controls. Would it help is some controls were on the steering wheel? (I am curious as to why that is. Formula 1 cars have everything on the steering wheel and tractors nothing). It could be that tractor drivers have to look at the back a lot. Do you prefer multifunctional levers with a bunch of switches on them or individual buttons? Thanks.
Simon Reiter
Simon Reiter 3 oy oldin
since you aren't touching the stearing wheel that often on the field if you got gps you don't ned buttons on it. And if your steering you'll have the other hand on the controls

Dating myself but, I remember when we considered a farmer to be a wussie if he had an umbrella top to keep his neck from getting too red. And the seat circulation was from the one inch holes in that big ole steel butt shaped seat. And the perennial argument whether or not the narrow front end would flip the tractor as opposed to the wide one. Farmers back then did a lot more work in a day. BUT, they got a lot less done. Just due to the nature of the job. Still the best dang people on this planet. (or any other one that I know of)

Goddamn, technology has surely improved since the early 2000s! Tractors now in days are more computer than vehicles, soon we will see tractors looking like spaceships, no wheels no cab, no attachments, just automatic AI tractors that can plow, plant, fertilize, harvest all in one! Refill bu using a single material, like Star Trek food replicators, its seriously heading that way folks, they are tryin to make driverless cars and trucks, imagine when the day comes where ppl use a hover car to go somewhere, by then Mars will be another Country, u just travel on a cargo spaceship or travel spaceship n whip out your small ass holocomputer out, they scan it for your passport n u enter the republic of Mars lol. But anyways, beautiful tractor. Love these videos.

Is there no gas pedal? bc in germany every tractor has a gaspedal...
MrMetalhead 5 oy oldin
@de Moritz z things over there are simpler, see over here none of the models from 2013 I say to 2020 have pedals, ofcourse 90s and early 2000s tractors had both pedal and autopilot, but now its autopilot, u can select a speed n it goes but it doesn't use pedals unfortunately. What is sad is, this will sadly become the norm, days of pedals even manually driving will be automatic, hell someday u might see a car that doesn't even look like a car, no steering wheel, no pedals, uses voice control only, u speak the destination and speed n boom! Or maybe not voice control for driving, but motion sensors that detect your hand motions as u steer with just your hands in midair. Lost in parking lot? Call for it n it comes etc, someday same will be for tractors, u just sit in there, holographic dashboard n screens, motion sensors to detect hand motions for steering, speak to it to Make it go, etc. Its just way it is heading sadly
de Moritz z
de Moritz z 5 oy oldin
@MrMetalhead on that we agree but it think you can get pretty good compromises when using stuff from the last ten years there is a lot of tecnology in those machines but they are still machines not computers on wheels🙃and they still have a proper gas pedal... Well luckily in germany all the tractors have a gaspedal and the new ones have additional joysticks and so on to be driven with
MrMetalhead 5 oy oldin
@de Moritz z Either way, you still would be getting a good tractor, in my opinion, older is better in terms of longevity, reliability, power, efficiency and just plain enjoyment. Plus its cheaper too! New ones with fancy gadgets, auto drive, etc cost you more than a house n car combined!! Not to mention maintenance, old tractors are easier to maintain, u can get parts here n there for em, new ones u have the computer that prevents the farmers from repairing their tractors themselves, they gotta spend extra money n time to take the dealership to repair it then pay the huge bill for the repairs plus carting it back, too much money spent.
MrMetalhead 5 oy oldin
@de Moritz z well obviously it is more easier and convenient to use a pedal but the way it is going, not even cars will have pedals anymore or steering wheels, automatic driving is the future Bub, if u want a tractor with a pedal then you gotta buy an old one, and the thing with those is that do not support old tractors anymore. So if u want a tractor than is reliable, precise, accurate and has power, your forced to buy newer tractors, with all they fancy gadgets and automatic drive etc. If u want a big successful farm that is, you will need the brand new Computerized tractors, cuz they are also more convenient and easier for the farmers because the tractor does most of the work! I agree with you on a Tractor should have a pedal, I hate the new ones with computers, i wish they made tractors without computers but it's not how it works. But yes u can indeed buy used tractors with pedals, but thing is you gotta know where to buy em and then u gotta make sure it runs, you will have to sink money into making it run smoothly. So if you are up for a project a old tractor is the one for u. If u rather just buy a brand new 2020 model off the lot, no pedals n it does all the work for u, it is for you.
de Moritz z
de Moritz z 5 oy oldin
@MrMetalhead dude in terms of tech we are up to speed i can assure u that. I don't think us machines will be imported bc they are simply to big for our roads and the machines we have here are made for our markets you can drive midern tractors with your hands only but still i find that on the road a simple gas pedal is so much easier

This thing can pull any sized planter or drill on the market can it Not? Only problem is articulated are half the price. These things won't sell. Most ppl will get the smaller wheeled 8r 250 to 350 hp. After that might as well get a steiger row track.

Big Wax 6 oy oldin
I’m not familiar with this equipment at all but I’m trying to make sense of it instead of getting frustrated. I guess it’s great for large farms but is it worth the hassle of learning the tech vs just hopping out and setting up the equipment manually? Also I’ve done a little research about farmers repairing their machines systems “illegally” to avoid the ridiculous costs of #1 transporting it to and from the dealer ,and #2 the repair itself. Anyway, as cool as that is, in my opinion it looks like a cubicle with a great view. Still better than U.S. Navy Engine rooms lol. By the way diesels do have lifters if they’re running pushrods for the valves, most do I don’t know of an OHC Diesel at the moment, but it all depends on the specific engine and manufacturer.

Thank you Zach for the very informative video, it amazes me how far tractor technology has moved on over the years! Automatic everything, satellite tracking and auto steering soon you'll be able to control it all via remote control sat in your living room! I always remember as a child in Wales (UK) watching my old grandfather ploughing away with his old Fordson Major tvo, the only protection against the elements was his old trilby hat and mac with a sack pinned over his shoulders! Wander what he'd of modern tractors.

Very good. This brings back mostly good memories. My first tractor fieldwork was about 1964, when Dad trusted me with a Ford 9N to pull a drag harrow (perhaps 8 feet wide). It was important not to turn too sharply on the ends. Later, progressing into the early 1980s, the most complicated it got for me was using a JD 4840 with a Sidewinder cultivator. I still got nervous coming to the ends, since turning demanded quick action with the PTO lever, the 3pt lift, the steering wheel, and the brakes -- all while not destroying crop or turning too sharp! Between my time on the 9N and the 4840, i drove a Ford 900, a couple of IH M's, a JD B (hand-clutch), a JD 4420, at least three different JD xx30 models, a Case 830, and a Hesston 500 with a 14 foot hay head. These were for different farmers here in Central Nebraska. It was always turning at the ends that worried me! I look forward to seeing your video about programming the turnarounds.

I just run the older 800 series in front of the planter..i may get lucky and get to run an older first gen 8r this fall with the risk.
