Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

We lost my sister to a grain bin accident. We were unloading corn and her and my cousin we in there to make sure the other is safe but when you have teenage kids you get to messing around. There were standing in the middle and seeing how far they could go down and get back out. Grain is unbelievably heavy and just having your ankles covered is tough to pull out of. Sadly she went too far and could not get herself out and by the time they got the system shut down only the top tips if her fingers were sticking out. She was burred in corn and the red-dog was going into her lungs and after 45 min of trying to get her out they finally did but she lost consciousness about 15 min before that. The bin was huge and its like a liquid the more you shovel away it just gets replaced by more grain. They tried to bust open the side of the bin but the corrugated steel was designed to resist . I have begged that there should be a harness system in every bin since and all bins should have an emergency cutoff to power inside the bins. Such a tragic loss and I miss my sister every day. I was 14 (41 now) at the point in time and she was 16. It can happen to anyone. Please if your bin does not have a safety harness ADD one! It can save your life I don't understand why its not mandatory

@Zach I just wanted to say thank you for the videos. I'm in the USAF and I have been interested in Farming since I was your son's age. I grew up "chopping beans" in the bean field in Southeast Missouri which I'm sure you know means chopping down all the weeds and mini trees that tend to grow in the field. My dad drove a truck for one of our local farmers and I enjoyed every second I got to spend out there. I'm nearly 28 now and your videos enlighten me on what it truly means to be a farmer and I hope that one day when I retire from the USAF, that I can become a Farmhand and embrace the passion I've longed for my whole life. Thank you for all that you do.

I wish people who don't have to deal with regulations would spend a few days in the shoes of us who do. I work for a Natural Gas company in DC. 95% of my offices job is dealing with FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. We are technically lobbyists, but our main purpose is facilitating regulatory affairs for our corporate office in Houston. It's a constant and incredibly redundant job at times. There are layers and layers of regulations that overlap. Before ever breaking ground on our facility, we have spent nearly $65,000,000 and three years to get approvals. Nobody wants less healthy air, water and earth. Nobody. But the regulatory processes we deal with are incredibly inefficient and expensive.

I worked at the chem plant that makes D.E.F NH4OH %2-3 solution in water. Anhydrous ammonia NH3 and urea. It all starts from air and water and a lot if heat. All the oil refinery's had to add d.e.f ( aquasimonia) to all there furnace stacks. I worked beside the engineer on our site that designed the spray bars in stream of the exhaust stacks and adjusted the nozzles multiple times . They actually have a small semi trailer full of equipment they can monitor the air and NoX coming out the stacks with probes 24/7. I have seen a lot of things working in chem plants and oil refinery's not to many people see but now my knees a shot from climbing all those towers, tanks and furnaces.

I enjoy your videos. I had two opportunities to go into farming but decided on a different occupation since I couldn't tolerate the dust. Everything was mostly open station in the 50's. After retirement I helped farmers except by then there were climate controlled cabs. I understand about GPS guidance tractors but are the combines controlled the same way? I see the dome on the combine but wonder if there isn't something else keeping the header on the row. I ran a Deere 9500 for several years.

Glad to see you talk about grain bin safety. I'll never forget when we lost a neighbor and his dad from a silo incident when I was in high school. Farming can be great but safety first. I know your kids are getting an education of a lifetime by living on the farm. Now if we could teach the rest of the nation to live like our rural areas we would be fine.

Farming has come a long ways since the JD 95 with a 20' platform, but farmers still harvest 'til the wee hours of the night. Elevator guys (in Texas Panhandle we didn't have personal bins, dumped grain in big "elevators" where it stayed until sold) claimed dad didn't get started 'til dark and then he didn't want to quit at midnight, so we compromised -- they'd turn off the lights on top of the elevator 30 minutes before they wanted to close so we could get all our trucks and grain carts empty before they closed so we could cut until we quit or the moisture rose. I've cut until 2am many nights, then dad would come out early the next morning and service the machines and empty the trucks I'd loaded before I took over about 10am for another long run. We'd spend 10 days cutting wheat that way. Good days when you're young and full of life and a small farmer could make a living.
