NY Farm Girls, show me around their Dairy farm in Marietta, New York. The Dairy Girls speciality is caring for the calves on their farm. They use a milk taxi to feed their calves pasteurized milk from the bulk tank.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Isnt it funny how new yorkers used to regularly eat foods like fried chicken, chilli and spaghetti and paella in the 1960s but now they don't. Millenial new yorkers LOVE mutton, porridge and turnips and butter. They seem to love simple old fashioned foods. They have gone back to their ancestors diet.

Hard working farmers daughters. I dated one years ago, in the summer she lived in shorts and sleeveless tees. Haying or anything else, never wore Jean's. She even milked her parents cows barefoot in a tie stall barn. I always expected a call, " I cant go out tonight, I am at the hospital having my toes rebuilt". Thankfully that never happened. She learned to move very quickly.

Lies. In nature how would the calf survive with the mother. It’s because it’s a sick business, farming. They need to seaparate them of course given the environment they created.

I have lived in Central NY, near Syracuse, NY, for over 30 years. My wife and I run a small business of property rentals, mostly single-family homes in the Suburbs of Syracuse, NY. Always great to see small business success stories in UpState NY. Great to see one concerning Agriculture. As a pre-teen and teenager I spent a lot of time with 4-H, learning Animal Husbandry by taking care of several cows. All the best to NY Farm Girls!!

I’d be curious to know why they separate the calves more in depth. I know they said their immune system is zero and being near the older cows with adult immunity built up is risky. Also the stepping on them. But is that because they are in a barn and there are higher risks of that than in an open pasture? Compared to out in a pasture naturally they would not be separated for instance. Interesting stuff and appreciate everyone involved giving an eye into this amazing industry!
Captain Dee
Captain Dee 10 oy oldin
Yes, it's because they're in a barn. Most pastures have low pathogen loads, but barns often have high pathogen loads unless they're sanitized regularly (not scooped out -- I mean literally sanitized.) Calves have virtually no immunity at birth, but get a huge antibody dose from the mother's colostrum, provided the cow has a healthy immune system of her own. The colostrum antibodies only last about 10 days or so, after which the calves are extremely susceptible if the environment (their pen) and their milk/powdered milk replacer isn't prepared cleanly and fed quickly to prevent bacterial growth. Calves usually display illness as respiratory or scours (dehydration from diarrhea), both of which can be deadly unless quickly treated. Separating the cow and calf soon after birth makes it drastically easier to care for the cow, who has very high needs of her own (just like new human mothers) and requires excellent calf management to prevent calf health issues. It looks like these girls are doing a *fantastic* job. :)
